Today's agenda! A celebration of greed?

I've been looking forward to today all week! Today my friend, Brian, and I are going to go shopping, grab a bite to eat, and go see Capitalism: A Love Story. It's playing at an artsy theater in downtown Raleigh which means parallel parking might be involved, but I'm trying to save that panic attack for later, lol. Looks like gorgeous weather today, too!!

So in the spirit of Michael Moore, I stepped into Etsy's search engine armed only with the words 'art' and 'greed' and this is what I got:

Have a great weekend!

Can you Zibbet it just a little bit? Win a FREE Zibbet Premium Account!

**CONTEST CLOSED. WINNER CHOSEN**
CONGRATS TO MOON OF GLASS!
Yes, you can! If you've been a reader of my blog, you know that I have a shop at Zibbet and have sung their praises in two separate posts here and here. Zibbet is a young venue, but I truly like the vibe there, and the owners are very down to earth people who respond to you lickety-split!

One of the great things about Zibbet is that you can open a shop for free and list up to 25 items! That's a great deal for a free account. Zibbet has just launched their Premium Accounts at $7/mo. and for that price you can list unlimited items, customize your shop colors, choose from 4 different banner sizes, put widgets in your shop such as your Etsy mini or your Twitter feed, post video, rearrange your entire shop, and choose which feedback you want to appear! The $7/mo. is an introductory price; the regular price will be $15/mo.

Now, $7/mo. is a fantastic deal, but Zibbet is letting me give away a FREE Premium Account for life right here in this little post, so if you'd like to win a FREE Premium Zibbet Account for life, then you need to go to Zibbet, find an item you like, and come back and link to it in the comments. Be sure to leave your email address as well in case you win.

If you'd like an extra chance to win, then tweet 'I Want A Premium Account at Zibbet' and then come back here and comment with a link to that tweet, again, with your email address.

The winner will be chosen next Sunday night at 9pm, EST time! Good luck and let me see you Zibbet it just a little bit!

I've been tagged-10 facts about me

I was tagged by Fo-Shizzle Design Studios so it's my turn to share ten facts about me and to tag 10 others to do the same. This is a great way to get to know about each other and further develop our friendships, even though most of them are long-distance.

So... without further a-do, here's 10 facts about me:

1. I have two cats that have almost convinced me that I'm one of them.

2. I have synesthesia, specifically grapheme --> color synesthesia. All numbers and letters are a specific color in my mind as do days of the week and months of the year. For instance, I've never been able to think of the days of the week as anything but: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday. I don't know why Sunday and Wednesday are the same. They just are.

3. I write all the time. When I'm not writing, I'm thinking about writing.

4. Nothing thrills me more than findings beads that look exactly like lettuce or veggies or hamburgers.

5. I'm a bleeding heart liberal, and I consider myself just one person in this great big world, a person who has no right to deny health care to anyone else. I think politicians who think otherwise are incredibly selfish and quite frankly, cruel.

6. I like Laffy Taffy and tangy, sour candy.

7. I have a degree in Education with a concentration in High School English, but I spent my career being a child care teacher, director, business manager and then operations manager and then in accounts receivable for construction companies. I've taken coursework beyond college in Early Childhood Development and Computer Programming. Now, I run Risky Beads and the Handmade Highway. Go figure.

8. I'm an avid fan of: Mad Men, So You Think You Can Dance, Wipeout (because it's brainless hilarity), Hell's Kitchen, Kitchen Nightmares, Countdown, The Daily Show, Reno 911, The Rachel Maddow Show, Glee, Big Brother, and The Colbert Report, and documentaries. This year, I'm trying out Survivor.

9. I buy way too many music soundtracks and TV soundtracks. Including Mad Men. Great soundtrack!

10. Up until about 6 months ago, we didn't have Bravo on our cable system here, so I couldn't watch Project Runway. When we did get and I saw it come on one day, I realized that for years, I thought the show was Project Runaway. I was expecting a riveting documentaries about teens on the streets. o_0 I wish I was making that up!

I tag:
1. Five to Nine Design
2. Ollie's Boutqiue
3. Lynsey & Harper Confections
4. Moppets Closets
5. Californiablue
6. Hypnotransformations. Hypnosis To Transform Your life
7. Make Every Day Your Lucky Day
8. Addition Style
9. PieceMama
10. Luminous Art by Shannon

The Easiest Way to Get Featured on a Crafty Blog

Did you know that the easiest way to get featured on a crafty blog is to be..... left-handed? Yes, it's true. I, Lori, of this blog, Handmade Highway, and Notes from the Handmade Highway, also run a shameless little left-handed blog called Lefthand Madens! So, if you're a crafter or artist or vintage or supply seller AND just so happen to be left-handed, then all you need to do is 'heart' this shop on Etsy and I'll pull from your shop at some point when I'm featuring items on the blog. I feature at least one item a day in a Southpaw Sighting!

The amazing artwork used on the blog is from a fellow Etsyian, Jane George, who runs the shop JGeorge Photography. Jane is not a lefty, but I forgave her as soon as she agreed to let me use this unbelievably amazing lefty lady on the blog.

If you're even more ambitious and want to be full-fledge featured on the blog, then all you have to do is click here and follow the directions. I post full interviews with full Etsy minis as well. Lefthand Madens is not limited just to Etsy folks by any means; any crafter from anywhere is welcome!

So get busy, South Paws!!

The Only Option Left

Tonight is a very important night, the President speaks to the country about health care. I was driving around town the other day running errands, thinking to myself that, drat!, I forgot that I needed to stop at the grocery store for something. I hate grocery shopping, so I was trying to rationalize why I didn't really need to stop there. Couldn't I make it one more day?

That train of thought made me think about health care for some reason - probably that whole wait one more day thing...one more month...one more presidential election thing, and I was headed to the pharmacy to pick up prescriptions. My health insurance (via Cobra) ends on October 15. I've spent a lot of time making phone calls trying to figure out which meds will be affordable without insurance and which won't. ( I have chronic migraines that make it all but impossible for me to work for anyone but myself. They've gotten much better now that I work for myself, but I still have to have medicine.) So, while I was thinking about this and stopping at the pharmacy and not the grocery store, I started to wonder, why am I even allowed to go to the grocery store? I mean, I'm not insurable after October 15, so why should I have the luxury of shopping for food? Shouldn't I have to buy a weapon and just start hunting? And why do I even have a car? Shouldn't somebody take it? And a roof over my head? Ridiculous! Somebody should just come to my house and toss me and my beadage right out into the street!

Oh, stop being ridunkulous, you're probably saying. You can still buy your drugs without insurance. Well, yes, but not the really important ones. I'll be jonesing in front of Glaxo for those. And it's no big deal that since I already have this condition, any other bug I get on top of it, is extra problematic, so if I can't afford to see a doctor about that, then BONUS POINTS FOR ME! I don't know how I'll adjust about October 15th. I'm so used to donating 90% of my earrings to BCBS of NC so they can tell me that the medicine my doctor prescribes isn't good for me that the shock alone might do me in.

So, Mr. President, please remember that I'm just a person who lives a regular life, who goes to the grocery store and drives a car and pays rent and works for herself and oh yeah, I need affordable health care. I'm happy to pay for it; I'm not asking for anything free, just some access. Please?

I'll pick something up at the grocery store for you if you want.

Zibbet Launches New Premium Accounts!

If you're a frequent reader of my blog, you've probably seen my past ramblings about Zibbet in my post So Which Venue Is For You? Zibbet has been an up and coming venue for awhile now, and I joined their ranks last March. I've always liked it there, but now I like it even better because they're launching their new Premium Accounts.

Previously on Zibbet, it was free to list items and the commission on sales was 7.5%. Now, you can sign up for a Premium account and pay only $7/mo and avoid commission fees altogether! With a Premium account, you can list as many items as you like, change the colors of your shop, rearrange the items in your shop, choose from 4 different banner sizes (including 'Etsy' size if you want to use the one you already use at Etsy), set up shop sections, choose whether you want 3 0r 4 thumbnails across in your shop, and add all sorts of widgets like Twitter, Facebook, You Tube, etc. in your sidebar. You can view my shop to see what I've done with mine.

Zibbet has even put together a nifty video you can watch if you're the visual type like me. Just check out this article and the video is a about 1/2 down.

Here's a full run down of all the changes and an FAQ as well!

Volatility....

Sometimes I have a stone or bead in my midst for awhile before the words catch up with the design. I completed this piece over a week ago and then it just sat on my desk waiting for it's message. Today, suddenly, it arrived...

somehow loving you
and fearing you
bring me
equal
pleasure
i should
probably
see
a doctor
about that

I cannot divulge the story behind it. I will only say...that it is a...story.

Name That Niche-Understanding Your Place in the Handmade Market

If you’re trying to sell something, I hope you’ve figured that people will buy anything if you can brand it and market it right. If the bottled water market isn’t proof of that, I don’t know what is. Oh wait, yes I do. The diamond market. If you’re married and a woman and happen to have a diamond engagement ring on your finger, you can thank De Beers for that because a diamond is forever is one of the most brilliant, long-lasting, and lucrative advertising campaigns in the world. It was launched prior to The Great Depression and is still going strong. The art of selling is to make everyone think they don’t just want what you’re selling, they need it.

Now, you can take the idea of need and stretch it in all different directions—sort of like silly putty. Some people need to shop on Etsy because it’s trendy to them, and they feel fabulous when they buy handmade. Others need to buy one of a kind gifts to get that buzz. There’s probably a buyer out there who’s on a personal mission to buy something from every shop on Etsy. (We need to find her, don’t we?) So your job as a shopkeeper is to create a product and a shop that fulfills a need.

For instance, my niche is jewelry, but more specifically the joke or sentiment behind the jewelry. People come into my shop because they see something they like, but they often stay and/or buy because of the verbage or idea that comes with it. This is one of my favorite pieces. It’s called Tin Man Autopsy.

"It appears," the medical examiner said with a perplexed look on his face,
"That someone with bright red shoes stomped righ
t on his heart."

"I knew it," said Scarecrow. "I knew it all along."

"Yeah, right," mumbled Lion, "You've had a brain for what? A week?"

People loved that pendant, but they loved the story that goes with it even more because every time someone says, “Hey, I like your necklace,” they can tell them the story. Many of my pieces have a more sentimental aspect to them. I like to think of them as greeting cards you can wear. For example:
Hang In There
Your lily pad might be just around the pond.

A niche is defined as ‘distinct segment of the market.’ Now it wasn’t like there was a segment of the jewelry market just hanging out waiting for Risky Beads to come along; I had to carve my own niche and so do you. I can’t tell you what your niche is, only that you truly have to explore it, try it on, walk around in it, and decide what feels good to you. Your niche might be a very obvious one like mine or a more personal one that guides the design and feel for your shop in the background. Don’t feel like it has to be a neon sign that smacks people on the head when they click on your shop. It can be subtle. Think of how many successful soap makers there are on Etsy. A ton! And I find a new one every day that’s been around for a year and is brand new to me. Now, how many niches can you have for soap? After all, there are hundreds of soap sellers on Etsy and not nearly enough niches to go around, right? Wrong!

I challenge you to grab pen and paper right now, open another browser window and pick five soap shops at random that have at least 300 or more sales. Write down the name of each shop and then your first impression of it and a couple of adjectives to describe it. Once you're finished, look down at your list. You have five distinctly different shops there, don't you? Do the same thing with jewelry. You'll see it again.

The point of that exercise is to prove that you can have many shops selling similar products each with their own take on their segment of the market and therefore successful in their own right. One thing that all of those successful soap shops had in common besides the fact that they sell soap, is their commitment to their vision and their niche. It just goes to show you that if your niche is consistent, your customers will feel it and will want to browse in your shop. Even if they don’t buy, they might put your work in a Treasury or mention it to their friends or blog about it. All exposure is good exposure.

Finally, respect the brand you’ve created. Don’t flaunt it or super-size it. If you don’t feel like you have a brand yet, that’s okay. Don’t make one up just for the hell of it because it won’t work. Ask yourself what it is about your shop and what you sell that gives your shop an edge. Sometimes you have to sell for a while until you feel your brand come through. When I started selling, I didn’t know that each piece was going to have a story or poem or saying with it; it developed as my shop concept developed. The more I pieces I created, the more I realized how much more fun I had making pieces that needed therapy rather than just making ‘pink earrings.’ I could care less about pink earrings. But Frosting? Now that’s another matter altogether:

Every time you put that apron on, I want to lick your spoon.

Pale pink earrings that remind me of seduction and sugar? Delicious! And sold!

How to Hand Code an Email Address for Blogger

I like almost everything about blogger except its unsophisticated linking options. When you're linking text to a url, most blogging clients give you options, allowing you to specify if you're linking to a standard url or an email address, and many give you the option of choosing whether or not you want the link to open in a new window when your reader clicks on it. Blogger doesn't give you any of those options; you have to know how to do them yourself.

Here's now to hand code an email address if you want to have your sentence show up as example A vs. B.

A: If you have any questions, please email me.

B. If you have any questions, please email me at riskybeads [at] gmail [dot] com.

Here's what email me looks like hand coded. (Note that the stars * must be deleted in order for the code to work. They are there so the code won't compile and disappear on the page.)

<*a href="mailto:riskybeads@gmail.com" target="_blank"*>email me<*/a*>

You can change the words 'email me' to be anything you want. If you don't want it to open in a new window, then it would look like this with the target="_blank" removed.

<*a href="mailto:riskybeads@gmail.com"*>email me<*/a*>

That's it!

Oh wait, one more thing! You need to use your own email address or I will steal all of your customers. hee. hee.

Hitch a Ride on the Handmade Highway

Just in time for Independence Day, I'm launching a new project called the Handmade Highway, which is the flip side of FindAFeature. It's a dynamic, living directory designed to serve as a central location that customers, buyers, and fellow sellers can use when they're looking for sellers to feature on their blogs, participate in giveaways, and/or do custom work, consignment, or wholesale work. Each seller has their own billboard complete with all relevant data about their shop, links to their blog and Twitter account, pictures of their products, location, availability and contact information. Your information can be updated at any time; your shop can be searched via tags for location, products, category, etc.

There are a few requirements to be on the Handmade Highway:

--You must have at least 5 items for sale in your shop.

--You must have quality photos that don't detract from the product you're selling in any way.

--You must have a good customer service record.

Handmade Highway will be much more than a directory as we grow. I'm very excited to kick off this project, and if you'd like more information, please see this post. There is a nominal charge to register your shop(s) as this directory is a huge under-taking, but I think you'll find that it's more than worth it!

You can follow Handmade Highway on Twitter and FindAFeature on Twitter.
